Default Speex without Beta?

What is the problem with the Speex codec when running the non-beta version of the Windows client? How bad is the audio; is it close to normal, or unusable?

I'm looking at how painful a transition to Speex would be so Mac users can connect, and I doubt everyone who uses our vent server would upgrade, especially to a beta version. I'm trying to understand the repercussions of this.

Alternatively, when the next non-beta version coming out so it'll be a forced upgrade?

As I understand it, there are issues with the Speex codec in the 2.3.0 version which can cause sound problems.

You do not want to put Windows users in an environment where they're likely to experience sound problems. If they do, they'll blame the Mac/Speex and switch back to GSM so fast it will make your head spin. You'll have a difficult time getting them to try again because their perspective will forever be tainted that "Speex doesn't work."

Have them upgrade.

Why wouldn't they upgrade? They do it all the time. Every time a new version of vent comes out, they upgrade without thinking about it.

Flagship has indicated that the beta version is production quality and he recommends that any Windows user connecting to Speex-configured servers upgrades. He has stated that he simply hasn't moved the beta into production yet because he's got a few more features he wants to add before he does so.

transition is not painful and can be done is some simple steps.

1. download beta client
2. uninstall current Ventrilo
3. install beta client
4. open ventrilo and log into server

Red face

I am using Speex codecs for a long time now on numerous platforms, so reading this and thinking WTH just checked ... my WinXP Ventrilo says 2.3.0.
The only problem I experienced was when imput signal was too loud it was creating trashing sound, very bad static on top with original sound audible still, barely. When? On Setup/voice page, Monitor function had to show over 200 for it to happen. My microphone can never produce this, was only issue when using What-u-hear/Waveout as input.

As for quality, 32KHz 16 bit 8 Qlty 3756 Bytes/Sec ... can't hear the difference from GSM 44KHz ... Music sounds better for my ear on 10 Qlty version than on GSM.

I was once reeally nicely surprised when i had to reduce bandwith use from GSM 44KHz, and GSM 22KHz sounded bad already and tried Speex. I was trying to figure out if noone ever even tried speex or maybe problems, but then for last year i used vent on so many machines and with friend's asked to install and connect to Speex configured servers never had problem either.

I doubt there is a problem with Speex, after all, in Beta post it only states "improved quality", well, I would not complain.
