Can't hear Ventrilo inside game

I can't hear Ventrilo inside the game. When I alt-tab out to the desktop the sound comes back. Sometimes when inside the game if I press a menu button the sound comes back periodically.

Game:

GTR

System:

Athlon XP 2500+
1GB PC2700
NF7-S MB running the latest BIOS
nVidia v5.10 Unified nForce drivers
6600GT running Omega 6693

And I read the FAQ - it says I should be using an up to date sound card. Well, since the NF7-S is a relatively new board (on board sound), I would think it would be up to date enough.

I have just the opposite problem in game sound are ok, but in game voice in CS does not work with ventrilo running. If I exit vent then in game CS voice works fine.

ATI 9600 XT

I think it must be a setup issue of somekind. It was working before I reformatted my drive.
