Hi,
I've been reading all your old forums, and this one trying to get port forwarding to work with ventrilo so that I can set up my own server.
I'm using a Netgear DG834GT router/modem and have created the following:
Service name ventrilo
Action ALLOW always
LAN Server IP address192.168.0.6
And in the service table I've created:
Name ventrilo
Type TCP
Start Port 3784
Finish Port 3784
I've disabled the windows XP firewall and uninstalled my old zonealarm firewall (which was allowing these ports anyway)
yet still can't connect from my internet IP.
I've updated the firmware of my router to V1.01.25 just incase it was the old version that was stopping this.
I've followed several walkthroughs trying to set this up, but all give the same information as above.
On the old support forums there was a link to check if your port was open, and it says it is, yet I still can't connect.
any advice?

Are you behind a router? You need to forward the correct port to the computer that is running your Ventrilo server.. Hope that helps...

he just stated he was on a router and he had just forwarded the ports.
@kiint:
Let's start with the most local issues and work our way out. There's a real big problem with zone alarm not being completely uninstalled and still blocking ports. If there is another machine on the network, see if you can access it via internal ip (192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x). If you can, and people can't access it from your external ip, there's something wrong with the router setup.

I can connect to my machine by using the 192.168.. IP fine from any of my machines yet can't connect via my external IP.
There is definetly an issue with this router as i've been reading in all the other support forums, Just searching for DG834 (one of the earlier models) will show a ton of problems, but no matter how many posts I have searched I've been unable to find a solution.
Is there any other setting that I am missing from what I have mentioned in my other post? Has anyone else with this kind of router figured out how to get connected?
One thing I did try earlier, I set up winMX to connect through port 3784 and I was able to download a test file with no problems, so uninstalled this program and tried with ventrilo again....still can't connect to it.

Just went to www.grc.com (http://www.grc.com/) and did a scan on my port 3784
the results are here:
Port 3784 Open - Unknown Protocol for this port
- Unknown Application for this port
Solicited TCP Packets: RECEIVED (FAILED) — As detailed in the port report below, one or more of your system's ports actively responded to our deliberate attempts to establish a connection. It is generally possible to increase your system's security by hiding it from the probes of potentially hostile hackers. Please see the details presented by the specific port links below, as well as the various resources on this site, and in our extremely helpful and active user community
--------------------------------------
Unsolicited Packets: PASSED — No Internet packets of any sort were received from your system as a side-effect of our attempts to elicit some response from any of the ports listed above. Some questionable personal security systems expose their users by attempting to "counter-probe the prober", thus revealing themselves. But your system remained wisely silent. (Except for the fact that not all of its ports are completely stealthed as shown below.)
--------------------------------------
Ping Echo: PASSED — Your system ignored and refused to reply to repeated Pings (ICMP Echo Requests) from our server
also, I reinstalled zonealarm, put all settings to OFF, and uninstalled it as mentioned in some other forums as this may still be blocking access....nothing different happened, still the same problems..

found this really resourceful site googling issues with your router :)
http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Netgear/DG834/Ventrilo.htm
since i don't have your router, i can't help much more.

Thanks, just tried but still nothing...can only connect via internal IP's
just did a netstat -a -n as mentioned in another forum and got these results:
Proto Local Address Foreign Address State
TCP 127.0.0.1:3784 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
TCP 192.168.0.6:3784 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
So the port appears (to me) to be open. yet ventrilo still wont accept external connections :(

Well, still trying to get this sorted, No reply from Netgear support as yet (no surprise there)
have set up a dyndns so that it always points to my IP. still can't connect
Updated to the latest firmware, no change.
Tried deleting and reinstalling ventrilo. still the same.
tried deleting and re-entering port numbers for port forwarding...still nothing.
There is definetly a problem with this router and port forwarding or there is something with ventrilo that doesn't want to work with this router...who knows.
any more ideas anyone? i'm getting desperate here

I had the same problem, I couldn't conenct using my external ip neither.....I solved it...
1) Make sure you have a static ip, if you don't, change the settings.
2) Make sure you forwarded right port to right computer and then restart your computer. Then try to connect using you external ip. It worked for me.
If it still doesn't work, look at this: go to start-run typ cmd, click ok, then typ ipconfig/all check if everything is ok, mine says ip-routing isn't enabled, but don't mind that, it still work on my comp, so that's not gonna be the problem. Also check your Internet Connection setting and see if anything isn't right there.
Good luck, and may The Force be with you...;)
But never give up, Ventrilo is worth the effort;)
One thing is sure, ventrilo isn't the problem, the problem is your router if you ask me, try to contact the company again, or buy a new router...j/k ;)

1) Yep, set up a static IP, no change there :(
2) Yep, double checked, triple checked, static IP on this computer, still wont connect.
Have disabled all other firewalls on this computer.

I installed Skype out of interest tonight just to see if that would work (it's another voice program) and it worked without me having to configure a thing in my router...
Still can't get ventrilo to work, even when i installed the server on a newly installed machine with XP SP2 with the firewall turned off. It's definetly the router playing up, but how can I fix it!!!!!
has anyone got ventrilo to work with a netgear dg834gt??? anyone?

Hi there,
I have the same Router with other software, UltraVNC which is software helping me to connect from my work PC to my PC at home.
I had to Forward Ports 5800 & 5900 also to a now static IP, 192.168.0.6 - needless to say, WITHOUT any success.
I know the ports are open, I have tested with Shields UP! bu I am not sure if the forwarding part works.
I also have SKYPE on my PC and it works excellent!
I will keep you posted if you will do the same.
Regards,
Deon H

I spoke to Netgear support on the phone for around an hour trying different things, but still no luck getting this sorted.
They suggested that I connect with my old modem and see if i can get connections to the server that way. I'll give this a go when I get some spare time and see if it's the computer at fault, or the router....

Hi again,
from NEtgear's forum, I got a suggestion to create a Dynamic DNS with www.dyndns.org
I did it and I think I am one or two steps away from success.
I created an account as myname.dyndns.org
Only thing now is when I try to browse to my DYNDNS name from another computer in die same network, the Login of my Router pops up and not something from the PC I want to get access to.
Maybe this will help a bit?
